PROVO, UT – May 10, 2018 – Like most patients, Mr. Wilson* was terrified to get a colonoscopy. But after seeing how those he loved were affected by colon cancer, he understood why they are so critical.

Wilson’s first colonoscopy saved his life. During the procedure, his doctor found and removed three polyps. Wilson now goes in for regular colonoscopies to ensure he stays cancer free.

Colorectal cancer, a highly preventable and curable disease when detected early, is expected to cause over 50,000 deaths in 2018, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S.

In an effort to reduce colorectal cancer in Utah County, Chad Kawa, MD of Revere Health Gastroenterology is hosting a screening event on Saturday, May 12 at American Fork Hospital to provide free colonoscopy screenings to 25 uninsured patients in the community.

“Colonoscopy is an important screening test as it is the most effective way to detect and prevent colon cancer,” said Kawa. “I’ve organized this screening day to hopefully start raising public awareness for the importance of getting a colonoscopy and eliminating barriers that cause patients to avoid screening.”

This is Kawa’s second year organizing the screening day, and he hopes to see it continue to grow in the future.

Revere Health Gastroenterologists will provide colonoscopy screenings, with facilities and support donated by Intermountain Healthcare. Kawa is also partnering with Community Health Connect and Braintree Laboratories to connect with eligible patients and provide free bowel prep kits.
