3D Mammography & Breast Interventions

3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced form of breast imaging that uses X-ray technology to create a detailed, layered view of the breast tissue. This technique allows radiologists to see beyond dense breast tissue, improving the detection of abnormalities and reducing the likelihood of false positives. Breast interventions, such as biopsies and localization procedures, are often performed when a mammogram or other imaging test detects an area of concern. These minimally invasive procedures use imaging guidance to obtain tissue samples from the abnormal area, helping diagnose or rule out breast cancer. At Revere Health, our breast imaging specialists use the latest 3D mammography and breast intervention techniques to ensure accurate diagnoses and provide high-quality care for breast health.

What Is 3D Mammography?
3D mammography takes multiple X-ray images of the breast from different angles, which are then reconstructed into a three-dimensional image. This advanced imaging method provides a more comprehensive view compared to traditional 2D mammograms, making it easier to detect small or hidden tumors, especially in women with dense breast tissue.

Benefits of 3D Mammography:

Improved Detection: Increases the ability to detect early-stage breast cancer.
Fewer Callbacks: Reduces the need for additional imaging by providing clearer views of overlapping tissue.
More Accurate Assessment: Helps differentiate between benign and potentially malignant areas.

When Is 3D Mammography Recommended?
3D mammography is used for both routine screening and diagnostic purposes, especially for women who:

Have dense breast tissue.
Have a family history of breast cancer.
Are experiencing breast symptoms such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge.
Are undergoing follow-up evaluation for previous breast abnormalities.

Breast Interventions
If a suspicious area is detected during a mammogram or ultrasound, a breast intervention may be recommended to obtain a tissue sample for further analysis. Common breast intervention procedures include:

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
What It Is: Uses 3D mammography to precisely guide a needle to the area of concern to obtain a small tissue sample.
When It’s Used: Recommended for abnormal calcifications or small masses that cannot be felt but are visible on mammograms.

Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
What It Is: Uses ultrasound imaging to guide the needle to the suspicious area.
When It’s Used: Typically used when abnormalities are seen on an ultrasound but not visible on a mammogram.

MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy
What It Is: Uses MRI technology to locate and biopsy areas that are only visible on MRI scans.
When It’s Used: Often recommended for high-risk patients or to further evaluate inconclusive findings.

Wire Localization (Pre-Surgical Localization)
What It Is: A thin wire is placed using imaging guidance to mark the location of an abnormality for surgical removal.
When It’s Used: Performed when surgery is needed to remove a small or difficult-to-locate abnormality.

What to Expect During a Breast Intervention
Breast intervention procedures are minimally invasive and typically performed using local anesthesia. During the procedure:

Preparation: You may be asked to avoid certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure. Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit, as you may need to remove your top.
Procedure: You will be positioned for imaging, and a small incision may be made for the biopsy needle. The needle is guided to the area of concern using imaging technology, and a small tissue sample is collected.
Aftercare: The procedure site is bandaged, and aftercare instructions are provided. Most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two.
