Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that helps filter waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform this function effectively. Using a specialized machine, hemodialysis draws blood from the body, cleans it through a dialyzer, and then returns it to the bloodstream. This life-saving therapy is typically performed several times a week at a clinic or dialysis center, but home hemodialysis options are also available for some patients.

How Hemodialysis Works
During a hemodialysis session, blood is drawn from a vein, passed through a dialyzer (artificial kidney), and filtered to remove harmful substances. The cleaned blood is then returned to the body. The process is usually done through a vascular access point, such as a fistula, graft, or catheter, and each session typically lasts around four hours.

When Is Hemodialysis Needed?
Hemodialysis is recommended for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or severe chronic kidney disease when the kidneys are no longer able to filter blood adequately. Symptoms indicating the need for dialysis include fatigue, nausea, swelling, and difficulty concentrating.
