HIDA Scan
A HIDA scan, or hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan, is an imaging test that captures detailed images of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and small intestine to help diagnose various conditions affecting the biliary system. This procedure uses a radioactive tracer injected into your bloodstream, which is then tracked as it moves through your liver and into your gallbladder and bile ducts. The test provides valuable information about how well these organs are functioning, making it a critical tool for diagnosing conditions such as gallbladder disease, bile duct obstructions, or liver function issues. At Revere Health, we offer HIDA scans to provide clear, accurate insights into your liver and gallbladder health.
How a HIDA Scan Works
During the test, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into your vein. The tracer travels through your liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts, and a special camera captures images as it moves through the system. These images help your doctor evaluate how effectively your bile flows from the liver to the small intestine.
When Is a HIDA Scan Recommended?
A HIDA scan is commonly used to diagnose and evaluate conditions such as:
Gallbladder Disease: To assess gallbladder function and diagnose issues such as gallstones or cholecystitis.
Bile Duct Obstruction: To detect blockages in the bile ducts that may cause jaundice or other symptoms.
Biliary Atresia: To check for this rare condition that affects infants, where the bile ducts are blocked or absent.
Liver Function: To evaluate how well the liver is producing and releasing bile.
Post-Surgery Evaluation: To check for complications after gallbladder or bile duct surgery.
What to Expect During a HIDA Scan
Preparation: You may be asked to fast for a few hours before the test. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions based on your medical history.
Procedure: A radioactive tracer is injected into your vein, and you will lie still while a gamma camera takes images of the tracer as it moves through your liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. The test typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, and in some cases, you may be given a substance to stimulate gallbladder contraction during the scan.
After the Scan: The radioactive tracer will naturally leave your body through urine or stool, and you can resume normal activities after the test.
Benefits of a HIDA Scan
Detailed Imaging: Provides clear and precise images of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts.
Functional Assessment: Offers insights into how well your organs are working, not just their structure.
Noninvasive: A safe and effective diagnostic tool with minimal discomfort.
