Mole & Skin Biopsies

Mole and skin biopsies are provided at Revere Healthto help diagnose and assess a variety of skin conditions, including cancer. This procedure involves removing a small sample of skin tissue, which is then examined under a microscope to detect abnormalities, determine the presence of cancer cells, or evaluate other skin conditions like infections or rashes.

Why Are Mole & Skin Biopsies Important?
Biopsies are a key diagnostic tool for early detection of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, as melanoma has a higher likelihood of spreading to other parts of the body if not caught early. Other non-cancerous conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, can also be evaluated using a skin biopsy, helping your provider develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Types of Skin Biopsies
There are different types of skin biopsies, each chosen based on the size, location, and appearance of the lesion:

Shave Biopsy: Removes the top layer of skin using a small blade, commonly used for raised growths or suspected basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas.
Punch Biopsy: Uses a circular tool to extract a deeper sample of skin, ideal for diagnosing inflammatory conditions or deeper lesions.
Excisional Biopsy: Removes the entire lesion along with a margin of surrounding skin, often used when melanoma is suspected.

What to Expect During the Procedure
Skin biopsies are typically performed under local anesthesia to numb the area. The procedure is quick, taking only a few minutes, and the sample is sent to a lab for analysis. After the biopsy, you may experience minor discomfort, and the site will be covered with a bandage until it heals.

Regular skin checks and prompt evaluation of any new or changing moles are essential for maintaining skin health and preventing serious conditions from progressing. If you have a suspicious mole or skin growth, contact Revere Health to schedule a consultation for a thorough evaluation and biopsy, if necessary.
