Polysonograms
Polysomnograms, also known as sleep studies, are diagnostic tests used to evaluate and diagnose sleep disorders by recording various physiological activities during sleep. These tests measure brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing patterns, and more to provide a comprehensive understanding of a patient’s sleep quality. At Revere Health, we offer polysomnograms for adults and children aged 3 and older, including baseline, split-night, and titration studies to accurately diagnose and manage sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome.
Types of Polysomnograms
Baseline Study: A full-night study that records your normal sleep patterns to detect any abnormalities, such as interruptions in breathing, snoring, or leg movements.
Split-Night Study: Combines diagnosis and treatment in a single night. The first half of the night is used to diagnose a sleep disorder, and the second half involves testing treatments like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
Titration Study: Conducted after a diagnosis of sleep apnea, this study adjusts CPAP or BiPAP pressure levels to determine the most effective settings for keeping the airway open during sleep.
What a Polysomnogram Measures
Brain Waves (EEG): Tracks sleep stages and cycles, helping to detect disorders like insomnia or narcolepsy.
Oxygen Levels (Oximetry): Measures the amount of oxygen in your blood, which can drop during conditions like sleep apnea.
Heart Rate (ECG): Monitors your heart’s activity to detect any irregularities during sleep.
Breathing Patterns: Identifies pauses in breathing or shallow breathing, key indicators of sleep apnea.
Body Movements: Records movements such as leg twitches or restless legs that can disrupt sleep.
Benefits of Polysomnograms
Accurate Diagnosis: Provides detailed data to diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders.
Customized Treatment: Results guide tailored treatments, such as PAP therapy, for conditions like sleep apnea.
Improved Health: Proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders can improve overall health, reducing risks like high blood pressure, heart disease, and fatigue.
