TEE
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an advanced imaging test that uses ultrasound waves to create detailed pictures of the heart and its structures. Unlike a traditional echocardiogram, which uses a transducer on the chest, TEE involves passing a specialized probe down the esophagus to get closer to the heart. This approach provides clearer, more accurate images, making it easier to diagnose heart disorders, especially those affecting the heart’s valves, chambers, and blood vessels. At Revere Health, we use TEE to help diagnose complex heart conditions and guide treatment decisions with precision.
How TEE Works
During TEE, a thin, flexible tube with an ultrasound probe at the tip is gently guided down the throat into the esophagus, which lies just behind the heart. This position allows the ultrasound probe to capture highly detailed images of the heart’s internal structures without interference from the ribs or lungs. The test typically lasts 30-60 minutes and is performed with sedation to ensure comfort.
When Is TEE Recommended?
TEE is often recommended when standard echocardiograms do not provide enough information, or when detailed imaging is required to diagnose or monitor specific heart conditions, such as:
Heart Valve Disease: To assess the function and structure of the heart valves.
Congenital Heart Defects: To evaluate abnormal heart structures present at birth.
Atrial Fibrillation or Clots: To check for blood clots in the heart that may cause stroke.
Endocarditis: To detect infection or inflammation of the heart’s inner lining.
Aortic Aneurysm or Dissection: To monitor the aorta and check for abnormalities.
What to Expect During TEE
Preparation: You will be asked to fast for several hours before the test. A sedative is administered to help you relax, and your throat may be numbed to make the procedure more comfortable.
Procedure: The TEE probe is gently inserted through your mouth and down your esophagus. Ultrasound waves are used to capture detailed images of the heart, which are displayed on a monitor for the cardiologist to review.
Recovery: After the test, you will be monitored until the sedation wears off. Most patients can go home the same day, but you may need to avoid eating or drinking for a short period afterward.
Benefits of TEE
Clearer Images: Provides highly detailed views of the heart, especially useful for diagnosing complex conditions.
Minimally Invasive: A safe and effective way to gather detailed information without surgery.
Accurate Diagnosis: Helps identify heart abnormalities that may be missed by other imaging tests.
