Wireless pH Studies and Esophageal pH Studies
Esophageal pH Monitoring at Revere Health
At Revere Health, we use wireless pH studies and esophageal pH monitoring to diagnose acid reflux and other esophageal conditions. These tests measure how often stomach acid enters the esophagus and how long it stays there—key information for diagnosing GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and related disorders.
What is an Esophageal pH Study?
An esophageal pH study records acid levels in the esophagus over 24–48 hours. There are two main methods:
Wireless pH capsule (Bravo system): A small capsule is attached to the esophagus during an endoscopy. It transmits acid data wirelessly to a receiver you carry, and naturally falls off after a few days.
Catheter-based pH probe: A thin tube with sensors is placed through the nose into the esophagus, measuring acid levels for 24 hours.
Both methods help determine whether symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, or chronic cough are linked to acid reflux.
Why are Wireless pH Studies Used?
This test is recommended for patients who:
- Have reflux symptoms that don’t improve with medication
- Need confirmation of GERD before treatment or surgery
- Experience chest discomfort, regurgitation, or unexplained cough
- By directly measuring acid exposure, pH monitoring provides more accurate results than symptom tracking alone.
What to Expect During the Test
- Wireless pH capsule: Placed during an upper endoscopy; detaches on its own in a few days
- Catheter-based probe: Inserted through the nose into the esophagus for 24 hours
- Patients continue normal daily activities while data is recorded
- Providers may ask you to keep a diary of meals, sleep, and symptoms for comparison with test results
