Abscess Drainage/Care
At Revere Health, we provide professional abscess drainage and care to treat painful masses filled with pus and debris that form under the skin due to infection. An abscess can develop anywhere on the body and often results from a bacterial infection causing localized swelling, redness, and pain. Proper drainage is essential to relieve discomfort and prevent the spread of infection to surrounding tissues.
What is Abscess Drainage?
Abscess drainage is a minor surgical procedure where your healthcare provider makes a small incision in the abscess to release the trapped pus. The area is then cleaned, and if needed, a sterile gauze may be placed inside the incision to allow for continued drainage over the next few days. The goal is to ensure complete removal of pus and promote healing. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.
When is Abscess Drainage Needed?
Abscess drainage is recommended when the abscess does not heal on its own, becomes larger or more painful, or when it causes fever or other signs of systemic infection. While smaller abscesses may resolve with warm compresses and home care, larger or deep infections require professional drainage to prevent complications such as cellulitis or sepsis.
Post-Procedure Care
After drainage, the area should be kept clean and covered with a sterile dressing. Our providers offer detailed aftercare instructions, including how to change the dressing and monitor for signs of re-infection. Antibiotics may be prescribed if the infection is severe or has spread. With proper care, most abscesses heal within 1 to 2 weeks.
