Retrievable IVC Fillers

Retrievable Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are small, cage-like devices inserted into the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. These filters are designed to capture blood clots that may form in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) and prevent them from traveling to the lungs, where they could cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Unlike permanent IVC filters, retrievable filters can be removed once the risk of blood clots has decreased. At Revere Health, we provide expert placement and retrieval of IVC filters as part of our comprehensive vascular care services.

How Retrievable IVC Filters Work
Placement: The filter is inserted into the inferior vena cava through a small incision in the neck or groin using a catheter. Once in place, the filter expands and acts as a barrier, catching blood clots before they can reach the lungs.
Temporary Use: Retrievable IVC filters are typically used for short-term protection in patients who are at temporary risk of developing blood clots, such as after surgery or during periods of immobility.
Removal: Once the risk of blood clots has subsided, the filter can be safely removed using a minimally invasive procedure, reducing the risk of long-term complications.

Conditions Treated with IVC Filters
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Prevents clots that form in the deep veins of the legs from traveling to the lungs.
Pulmonary Embolism (PE): Used in patients who have already had a PE or are at high risk of developing one.
Temporary Contraindication to Blood Thinners: For patients who cannot take anticoagulant medications due to surgery, trauma, or other conditions.

Benefits of Retrievable IVC Filters
Prevent Life-Threatening Embolism: Provides an immediate and effective way to prevent pulmonary embolisms in high-risk patients.
Minimally Invasive: The placement and removal of IVC filters are minimally invasive procedures that require little recovery time.
Temporary Protection: Retrievable filters can be removed once the patient’s risk of clotting has decreased, reducing the risk of long-term complications associated with permanent filters.
