Joseph Matthew Armstrong, MD

Joseph Matthew Armstrong, MD obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Asian studies, graduating as valedictorian, magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University and then obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Armstrong then completed his urology residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine. During his doctorate, Dr. Armstrong was nominated for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He speaks fluent English and Japanese.

Dr. Armstrong specializes in Holmium enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). He is the preeminent and highest volume HoLEP surgeon in the state of Utah, performing over 175 cases a year. Dr. Armstrong also specializes in urologic cancers such as prostate, bladder, testicular, and kidney cancer; Da Vinci robotic surgery; no-scalpel vasectomies; and treatment of kidney stones. Dr. Armstrong is committed to upholding the principles of Value-Based Care by providing the highest quality care at the lowest possible cost.

Healthcare costs are excessively high. Beyond my commitment to patient care, I am passionate about healthcare reform. The current healthcare system in our country is flawed, and I aim to be transparent with costs so you know what surgery will entail financially.

Due to longstanding national laws, hospital systems and their employed physicians can charge nearly double for labs, imaging, office visits, and surgeries compared to private practice physicians or groups.

I am dedicated to avoiding unnecessary tests and will provide options for more affordable labs, imaging, and procedures. The vast majority (~90%) of my surgeries are performed in ambulatory surgical centers, which typically cost about half of what surgery in a hospital would.

Dr. Armstrong knew at a young age that he wanted to become a physician. He enjoys building relationships with new people and loves to help patients find healing and happiness. He finds ways to make his patients laugh because he believes that laughter is the best medicine. Dr. Armstrong works hard to ensure that patients have a safe and rewarding experience when they visit him.

When he is not taking care of patients, Dr. Armstrong enjoys spending time with his family, going on vacation, going out to eat, golfing, fishing, playing basketball, and playing strategic board games.
