ERCP
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver. During the procedure, a flexible tube called an endoscope is inserted through the mouth and guided through the throat, stomach, and small intestine. A contrast dye is then injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts, allowing for detailed X-ray images to identify blockages, tumors, or other abnormalities. ERCP is unique in that it allows for both diagnostic imaging and therapeutic intervention in the same session. At Revere Health, we offer ERCP to help manage a variety of gastrointestinal and liver conditions with precision and care.
When Is ERCP Recommended?
ERCP is commonly recommended for patients experiencing:
Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin or eyes due to bile duct blockage.
Abnormal Liver Function Tests: To investigate potential bile duct or liver issues.
Gallstones: Stones in the bile ducts that may cause pain or infection.
Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas.
Bile Duct or Pancreatic Tumors: To assess growths and guide biopsy.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Preparation: Patients may be instructed to fast for several hours prior to the procedure.
Sedation: Sedation is administered to keep you comfortable throughout the test.
Procedure: The endoscope is carefully inserted through the mouth and advanced to the small intestine. A catheter is used to inject a contrast dye, and X-ray images are taken to examine the bile and pancreatic ducts.
Treatment: ERCP can also be used to perform treatments, such as removing gallstones, placing stents, or opening narrowed ducts.
Benefits of ERCP
Combined Diagnostic and Therapeutic Tool: Allows for immediate treatment if an issue is identified.
Minimally Invasive: Reduces the need for open surgery.
Targeted Approach: Provides detailed images and access to the biliary and pancreatic ducts.
