MWT

The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a diagnostic procedure used to measure a patient’s ability to stay awake during the day, especially in quiet and stimulation-free environments. This test is often used to assess daytime alertness and determine if a patient has excessive daytime sleepiness, which may be linked to sleep disorders such as narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea. At Revere Health, we perform MWT to help evaluate sleep-related issues and guide appropriate treatment plans.

How MWT Works
Test Procedure: The MWT typically involves a series of sessions where the patient is asked to sit comfortably in a quiet, dimly lit room and attempt to stay awake. Each session lasts about 40 minutes, and the patient is monitored for signs of drowsiness or falling asleep.
Monitoring: Sensors measure brain activity, eye movement, and other physiological signs to determine the patient’s alertness levels.
Multiple Sessions: The test is usually conducted over several sessions throughout the day to assess the patient’s ability to maintain wakefulness under non-stimulating conditions.

Conditions Diagnosed with MWT
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: Helps diagnose conditions where patients struggle to stay awake during the day, such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea.
Sleep Apnea: Assesses the effectiveness of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea by evaluating improvements in daytime alertness.
Assessing Alertness: Useful for individuals in professions where alertness is critical, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.

Benefits of MWT
Objective Measurement: Provides an accurate, objective measure of daytime wakefulness and alertness.
Evaluates Sleep Disorders: Helps determine if sleepiness is affecting a patient’s ability to function in daily life.
Monitors Treatment Effectiveness: Assesses whether treatments for sleep disorders, such as CPAP therapy, are helping improve daytime alertness.
