Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a diagnostic test that evaluates the function of the middle ear by measuring how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure. This test is essential in helping audiologists diagnose and monitor various audiologic conditions that may affect hearing or balance.

What Does Tympanometry Detect?
Middle Ear Infections: Tympanometry can identify fluid build-up behind the eardrum, a common sign of middle ear infections (otitis media).
Eardrum Perforation: The test helps detect tears or holes in the eardrum.
Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: Tympanometry can reveal blockages or improper functioning of the Eustachian tube, which can lead to pressure imbalances.
Hearing Loss: It helps in diagnosing conductive hearing loss due to middle ear problems.

How Tympanometry Works
During the test, a small probe is placed in the ear canal, which changes the air pressure while measuring the eardrum’s movement in response. The results are charted on a tympanogram, which your audiologist will interpret to diagnose any underlying conditions.

Why Tympanometry is Important
This non-invasive test provides valuable information about the health of the middle ear and is critical for diagnosing and treating ear-related conditions early, preventing further complications.
