MLST
The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MLST) is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate excessive daytime sleepiness. This test measures how quickly you fall asleep in a series of controlled environments during the day. The MLST is commonly used to diagnose sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. At Revere Health, we use MLST to assess sleep-related conditions and help guide appropriate treatment plans.
How MLST Works
Daytime Naps: The test involves a series of five 20-minute nap opportunities spaced two hours apart throughout the day.
Sleep Latency Measurement: During each nap session, the time it takes for you to fall asleep (sleep latency) is recorded. If you fall asleep, the stages of sleep you enter are also monitored.
Monitored Environment: Sensors are used to measure brain activity, eye movements, and muscle activity, providing a comprehensive analysis of your sleep patterns.
Conditions Diagnosed with MLST
Narcolepsy: This test is often used to confirm narcolepsy by detecting rapid onset of REM sleep during nap sessions.
Idiopathic Hypersomnia: For individuals with chronic daytime sleepiness, the MLST can help rule out other conditions and diagnose idiopathic hypersomnia.
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: Helps identify the severity of daytime sleepiness and provides information for treatment planning.
Benefits of MLST
Accurate Diagnosis: Provides objective data on sleep patterns and sleep onset, helping diagnose specific sleep disorders.
Guides Treatment: Helps determine the best course of action for managing excessive daytime sleepiness, whether through lifestyle changes or medication.
Non-Invasive: The test is simple, non-invasive, and provides valuable insights into your sleep health.
